Your Guide to Wellness with Stomach Cancer guide

Your Guide to Wellness with Stomach Cancer “a quantum leap in patient-centered information,” says the Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine.

MORRISTOWN, NJ – In late 2016, Lilly Oncology and Morristown, New Jersey-based Viver Health, LLC partnered to fill a need for patients diagnosed with gastric or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancers.

Brian E. Lacy, PhD, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, was one of the medical experts Viver Health partnered with to research evidence-based information in developing Your Guide to Wellness with Stomach Cancer

According to Doctor Lacy, patients with these types of cancer “struggle with eating and have troublesome symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Nutritional compromise is common in these patients." (Prior to development of the Guide) there was “little patient-friendly information about diet and nutrition for this group.” Viver Health addressed this unmet need by researching, editing and designing the easy-to-understand 5”x 8,” laminated, Pocket Health Guide.

In addition to consulting with Dr. Lacy and other medical experts, the Viver Health team interviewed patients with gastric or GEJ cancer and conducted extensive and systematic, scientific research to develop the Guide for this unique patient group. The Guide employs Viver’s 5-simple-step process that leads patients and caregivers through healthy eating habits to support recovery.

In May of this year, Vicki Barghout, Viver Health’s founder and president, led Viver Health’s team in presenting the research behind the Guide at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research (ISPOR) International Conference in Boston.

Among their findings: Some, but not all patients with gastric or GEJ cancers received meaningful dietary advice during or immediately after treatment. No patient tolerated commonly recommended nutritional shakes. Gastric and GEJ cancer patients are concerned about subpar nutrition after treatment. Though foods and beverages impact these patients differently, commonalities do exist.

This Guide is one of multiple evidence-based, Pocket Health Guides published by Viver Health. The first, Reduce Your Risk of Cancer, resulted from Vicki’s one-woman mission to find evidence-based information on foods that are medicine to help her overcome her own breast cancer.
